Government Public Safety Officials From Western U.S. to Meet in Coeur d’Alene May 30 - June 4

BOISE – Idaho public safety officials and state government telecommunications leaders and technology professionals from 13 western states will focus on issues such as homeland security and public safety to providing broadband connectivity to rural citizens when they meet in Coeur d’Alene on May 30 and June 1-3.

The State of Idaho and the Department of Administration is hosting the Western Region Meeting of the National Association for Telecommunications & Technology Professionals Serving State Government (NASTD) June 1-3.

Preceding and coinciding with the NASTD session, public safety officials from Idaho’s city, county and state governments who are members of the 700 MHz Regional Planning Committee for Region 12 (Idaho) will meet on May 30 at to discuss public safety communica-cations interoperability and statewide coordination. Both meetings will be held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Captain Wayne Longo, Region 1 Commander of the Idaho State Police will provide opening comments to NASTD attendees Sunday morning (June 1). Longo is a 26 and one-half year ISP veteran and has spent his entire career in the Coeur d’Alene, most recently serving as Investigations and Patrol Commander for many years. He also commands the department's Crowd Intervention Team (CIT), which responds to civil unrest, and also provides assistance on high profile events statewide.

Delegates will tour the Kootenai County 911 Communications Center on Sunday, as well.

Dr. Rand C. Lewis, Director of the Martin Institute of International Affairs at the University of Idaho, will address NASTD attendees on Monday. Dr. Lewis speaks throughout the country on international terrorism and related homeland security issues, consulting with military departments and the U.S. State Department.

Other speakers include Hale Irwin, Telecommunications Division Chief - State of Vermont, President of NASTD; and Joe Roche, Administrator of the Division of Information Technology and Communication Services – Idaho Department of Administration.

The 700 MHz Regional Planning Committee is responsible for 700 MHz radio frequency planning and coordination throughout the state and follows Federal Communications Commission regulations and standards. The committee’s meeting will feature a panel discussion on radio communications, telephone and communications resources, current legislation and FCC rulings.

Since the September 11th terrorist attacks a strong national movement has been underway to insure government’s ability for interoperable communications. One of the U.S. Homeland Security Department’s major focus points is achieving interoperable communications for first responders, which is a major focus of both groups.

NASTD attendees will also report on state progress and discuss ways to improve services for state agencies and other public entities, often including hospitals, prisons, colleges and universities. Members also play a strategic role in planning and shaping their states’ communications infrastructures and policies.
